The Chad Hutto birthday show playlist
15 March 2012
  1. Casual Curious, “Rock My Boat” (Lungs, 2011) [Greensboro musicians]
  2. Cocteau Twins, “When Mama was Moth” (Head over Heels / Sunburst and Snowblind, 1983)
  3. New Order, “Sunrise” (Low-Life, 1985) [a song that the band that Chad and I were in used to play]
  4. Craft Spells, “You Should Close the Door” (Idle Labor, 2011) [Thanks to Chad for turning me onto this Andrew Weather Ensemble, “Left Arm Sunburnt (Iowa Edit) (We’re Not Cautious, 2011) [A really sophisticated, ambient/folk album from some Greensboro musicians]
  5. Andrew Bird, “Lusitania” (Break it Yourself, 2012) [I can only take so much of Andrew Bird. It is really great, but it is so precious and accomplished. Virtuosity wears on me much faster than amateurism. But this is a great track.]
  6. St. Vincent, “Year of the Tiger” (Strange Mercy, 2011) [I love the fact that she has essentially taken a reductionist pseudo-”Native American dance” melody, and turned it into a complex song]
  7. Red House Painters, “San Geronimo” (Ocean Beach, 1995) [I will always associate this song with Santa Barbara and the PCH]
  8. Cate Le Bon, “Falcon Eyed” (Cyrk, January 2012) [I really like this new album by this Welsh singer. Her sound is so hard to peg—not quite psych rock / folk from the 1960s; just enough pop sensibilities to make it stick; but those vocals are so off in a great way]
  9. Pale Saints, “Throwing Back the Apple” (In Ribbons, 1992) [Rediscovered this album in prepping for this show. Broke out my cassette copy, but had no working cassette player. Luckily, the music holds up far better than the medium]
  10. Lou Bond, “To the Establishment” (Lou Bond, 1974) [Just recently discovered this track and will be definitely looking deeper into Lou Bond. His vocal stylings are so delicate, compared to much of the Stax catalog from the 1970s.]
  11. Alabama Shakes, “Hold On” (Alabama Shakes, 2011) [Another really hard to peg band. Brittany Howard kills it here, especially with the “waits” around 2:45]
  12. Tennis, “Origins” (Young and Old, February 2012) [Great new material from the husband-wife duo from Denver]
  13. Bonobo, “Ghost Ship” (Black Sands Remixed, 2012) [I love the lazy clapping in this track]
  14. Bob Dylan, “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” (The Freewheelin Bob Dylan, 1963)
  15. Glue, “No Surprise” (Machine Keep Me Warm, 1994) [Norman, Oklahoma band, from their only album]
  16. Lush, “Bitter” (Scar, 1989) [Delicate and brittle and a bit wobbly. This is the Lush I find myself going back to over the later, cleaner, smoother stuff]
  17. Pixies, “Wave of Mutilation” (Doolittle, 1989)
  18. Ceremony, “Hysteria” (Zoo, March 2012) [This song makes me want to start a band, but I can’t figure out which instrument I would most want to play]
  19. Joy Division, “Leaders of Men” (Joy Division +- Singles, 1978-80, 2010 [og: An Ideal for Living, 1978])
  20. Django Reinhardt, “Moonglow” (The Very Best of Django Reinhardt, 2009) [I learned to play this song on guitar from Chad Hutto, who learned it from his father. Neither of us—obviously—could do anything like Django Reinhardt. I struggled getting my fingers to contort into odd shapes to hit these cords, but I can mostly remember the chord changes still]
  21. Velvet Underground, “What Goes On” (The Velvet Underground, 1969) [this is much more my appropriate level of musicianship—sliding barre chords in a repetitive fashion.]
  22. Wedding Present, “Corduroy” (Seamonsters, 1991) [“It’s just some boy, probably dressed in corduroy. He grew up fast, but you’ve not changed at all...”]
  23. Flaming Lips, “Talkin’ ‘bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever)” (Hit to Death in the Future Head, 1992) [This tour had really great visuals—somewhere between the DIY aesthetic of the previous tours, and the way, way, way over the top theatrics of the Soft Bulletin era and beyond]
  24. Let’s Wrestle, “I Am Useful” (Nursing Home, 2011) [Sometimes you need a reminder...]
  25. Simian Ghost, “Curtain Call” (Youth, February 2012) [This song was stuck in my head all day. When I got home, Hollis told me it had been stuck in his head all day as well]
  26. Chad Van Gaalen, “Do Not Fear” (Diaper Island, 2011)
  27. Damon and the Nomads, “I’ll Keep Looking for You” (Damon and the Nomads, 2011) [Another Greensboro, with an interesting—to me—name]
  28. The Hygrades, “In the Jungle” (Nigeria Rock Special: Psychedelic Afro-Rock & Fuzz Funk In 1970's Nigeria, 2008 [originally released as a 7” on EMI Nigeria, 1972]) [Love this track!]
  29. Frankie Rose “Know Me” (Interstellar, February 2012) [Former member of Vivian Girls, among others. Great album]
  30. Twin Shadow, “Castles in the Snow” (Forget, 2010)
  31. Mountain Goats, “Up the Wolves” (The Sunset Tree, 2005)
  32. 39 Clocks, “DNS” (Pain it Dark, 1981) [German underground post-punk band]

Broad Daylight, 8 March 2012 playlist

Today, my kids joined me for the show and helped select some of the music. Both of them are real naturals on air. Looking over the playlist—lots of brand new music here. It's been a busy few weeks of listening—that goes with grading, I suppose.
  • John Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra, “Cantina Band” (Star Wars: Original Soundtrack, 1977) [Reuben’s choice to start the day... ]
  • Esplendor Geometrico, “Moscú Está Helado” (The Minimal Wave Tapes: Volume One, 2010 [originally released as a single in 1980—this track, and both volumes of the Minimal Wave Tapes collections, has been on high rotation in my office this week]
